In a historic move, the Premier League announced on Thursday that all clubs had unanimously agreed to end gambling sponsorship on the front of their match shirts before the end of the 2025-26 season. This decision, following consultations between the league, its clubs and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, is the first voluntary action taken by a sports league in the UK to reduce gambling advertising.
While clubs will still be permitted to display gambling branding on areas such as jersey sleeves and LED advertising after the deadline, this move marks a significant step toward limiting the visibility of gambling sponsorship in football. Currently, eight Premier League clubs have a gambling company on the front of their uniforms, with an estimated value of £60 million per year.
It should be noted that clubs were also allowed to secure a new deal for sponsorship on the front of the kit before the deadline, indicating a stage of transition towards a more responsible approach to betting advertising in football.
